Top 5 reasons why you should start drinking coconut juice

For centuries, people in the tropical countries have been enjoying coconut drinks and its derivatives. Being low in calories, free of fats and cholesterol, yet having more potassium than 4 bananas, it seems too good to be true particularly when it's so sweet and tasty. Let's take a look in detail at the top 5 benefits:

1) Low calories yet high potassium

Coconuts contain 5.45 kCal, 1.3g of sugar, 61mg of potassium, and 5.45mg of sodium. Comparing to the most popular sports drink, Gatorade has 6.25kCal, 1.75g of sugar, 3.75mg of potassium, and 13.75 mg of sodium. This means coconut has less calories, sugar and sodium but yet gives you more potassium. Potassium helps in water balance, electrolytic functions, and nervous system. It keeps us more hydrated which is why more and more athletes are drinking coconut juice before and after a strenuous exercise.

2) Great nutritional content

Not just that, there are antioxidants present, and also Vitamin C, iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese and zinc. The great nutritional profile could actually match that of almonds or sunflower seeds! Due to these nutrients, coconut is effective in controlling high blood pressure and slow down aging.

3) Excellent hydrating properties

Studies have shown that coconut drink does indeed replenishes your bodily fluids better than sports drinks, thanks to the high amount of potassium. Additionally, you will not feel nausea, full or have stomach upset. Your body will also be able to accept coconut in higher quantity compared to a sports drink. The high amount of sugar in sports drink is just not so good for us, especially with our humid weather.

4) Relieves headaches

Ever had a terrible hangover or stomach upset but nothing can relieve the discomfort? Try coconut drink. The super hydrating properties will replenish the electrolytes in your body and make you feel much better. Headaches are usually due to dehydration, which is why coconuts can help to relieve it.

5) Promotes weight loss

Being low in calories, this refreshing drink does actually contain digestive enzymes that can boost fat metabolism. Plus, the low amount of sodium will not contribute to water retention and the high amount of potassium will actually flush out excess water! The hydrating properties and low amount of water retention will definitely help in better skin complexion too.

Coconut drink is actually my favourite drink to go with my snacks and thankfully, the magical properties encourage me to drink more of it. During pregnancy, I ate lots of almonds, raisins and drank coconut too. Nowadays, I drink it after a work out or after a hard day at work. You may not be able to buy fresh coconuts every day, but there are 100% coconut juice sold in cans or packets in the super markets!

With this, I hope you are more convinced to start drinking coconut water regularly. Stay hydrated!
