Nyonya pineapple tarts are crumbly pastry with citrusy-pineapple jam placed on top of it and usually with a cross on top so as to differentiate itself. These nyonya tarts are usually less sweet and more sourish compared to Huat Pineapple Tarts, which is more intense.
The enclosed pineapple jam, which are our Ong Pineapple Balls is more buttery and flaky, because you can taste more of the pastry than the pineapple jam. They also look nice like gold ingots and is said to bring wealth and prosperity, similar to pineapple which is known as 'Ong Lai' or 旺来 .
